What happens
In a voice room on a 390×844 phone, after joining with one other person (screenshot):

  • Controls take over the screen. The host call controls wrap into four rows: mic/deafen; camera/screenshare/screenshare-audio/fullscreen; chat/soundboard/more; End. Together they take roughly 40% of the screen, and the video area shrinks to the top half.
  • Only the remote tile shows. Unlike desktop, there's no small self-view.
  • Desktop-only controls. Fullscreen and screenshare are shown on a phone, where they're of little use.

Expected

  • A single-row control bar on phones (overflow into "More").
  • The self tile visible.
  • Desktop-only controls hidden.

Who: web/PWA users joining a voice room on a phone in portrait (the most common phone posture).

Measured (390×844, one remote participant): the host control bar (CallControls.tsx) is laid out for desktop:

That's about 330 px of a 844 px screen.

Suggested shape:

  • One row with mic, deafen, camera, soundboard, More (···) and End. Screenshare, fullscreen and audio output go under More, or are hidden on touch devices where getDisplayMedia isn't available.
  • Show a small self-tile.

Acceptance criteria: the control bar is ≤ 1 row (≈ 72 px) at 360–414 px wide, the self view is visible, and nothing is cut off. Related: #126 (landscape), #225.

Found in the October 2026 client audit (Playwright against a local Synapse + LiveKit stack, plus code reading). Code refs are at cinny 30e2dbcd, cinny-desktop 8f67ec7, element-call 3b0050e8.
