- Modal500 takes a label: Room/Space Settings ("<name> settings") and
Settings dialogs have accessible names.
- aria-selected on plain buttons (inbox filter chips, date/time picker
chips, verification/usage/notification menu items) -> aria-pressed; the
Permissions power chips open a menu -> aria-haspopup + aria-expanded.
- Labels tied to the room pack name input and the Export From/To dates.
- UserAvatar defaults to alt="" (decorative next to a name / in a
labelled button) unless a caller passes one.
- Composer placeholder: Slate's inline opacity 0.333 overrode the #222
AA-contrast class (2.66:1); it is dropped so the class (0.75) applies.
- e2e/a11y.spec.ts also audits Room Settings → Permissions, Emojis &
Stickers and Export, checks the dialog name, and audits the inbox.

'Unable to decrypt message' now carries one sentence per matrix-js-sdk
DecryptionFailureCode (describeDecryptionFailure, unit-tested against every
code so no raw code can leak into the copy) and, where something fixes it,
one button: no key backup → 'Set up key backup'; backup exists but this
session can't open it / key withheld for an unverified session → 'Unlock key
backup' / 'Verify this session' (both open Settings → Devices via a new
settingsRequestAtom that SettingsTab consumes); backup working or unknown
session (rust-crypto re-requests keys itself) → 'Retry', which re-runs
decryptEventIfNeeded. Sender-side problems are plain text. The raw code sits
in the placeholder's tooltip for support.
Verified headless on a fresh session in the encrypted seed room: each event
shows 'Sent before you signed in here, and no key backup exists…' with
tooltip HISTORICAL_MESSAGE_NO_KEY_BACKUP; the button opens Settings → Devices.

axe-core flagged 18 'button-name' criticals on the room view: the space
tabs, Home/Direct/Inbox/Search/Saved/Explore/Add Space/User Settings/
Unverified sidebar buttons, and each message's avatar button had no text
for screen readers. Labels mirror the existing tooltips; message avatars
read '<name>, open profile'. Room view now has zero button-name findings.

Avatar decorations: useAvatarDecoration cached ALL profile-field fetch
failures as "no decoration" permanently for the session. The member list
and timeline mount many avatars at once, so one rate-limited (429) burst
would wipe everyone's decoration until a full reload. Now only a genuine
404 (field unset) is cached; transient errors retry on the next mount.
Saved Messages panel — full redesign to match the canonical MembersDrawer:
- co-located BookmarksPanel.css.ts: toRem(266) + max-width:750px full-screen
media query, replacing the old position:absolute/zIndex:100 mobile "modal"
that had no backdrop or escape
- variant="Background" header; room avatars on each item (was a generic hash)
- priority tokens replace all raw opacity hacks; 3px borderLeft accent removed
- Escape-to-close; multi-line preview is now a proper folds Button (N38)
Media Gallery (N12): moved fixed positioning + width into MediaGallery.css.ts
using toRem(320) + a full-screen media query; border/header use config tokens;
added Escape-to-close on the panel (previously only the lightbox handled it).
Presence (SettingsTab / useUserPresence):
- N16: wrap presence-dot trigger in TooltipProvider; replace undefined
--bg-surface with color.Background.Container
- N17: add escapeDeactivates + isKeyForward/isKeyBackward to the FocusTrap
- N19: align reader labels (usePresenceLabel) to the setter vocabulary
(Online/Idle/Offline) so a chosen status matches the tooltip others see

The previous version wrapped UserAvatar in a div inside SidebarAvatar,
which broke the folds Avatar CSS (expects AvatarImage/AvatarFallback as
direct child) — causing the white circle instead of the avatar.
New approach:
- SidebarAvatar has only UserAvatar as its direct child (restored)
- Clicking the avatar opens Settings directly (original behavior)
- PresencePicker renders a small absolutely-positioned button in the
bottom-right corner of SidebarItem (which already has position:relative)
- Clicking the presence dot opens the status picker menu

Adds a manual presence picker to the sidebar user avatar. Clicking the
avatar opens a popout menu with Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb, Invisible,
and Auto (activity-based) options. The selected status is shown as a
colored badge on the avatar and stored in settings (survives reloads).
usePresenceUpdater now short-circuits for manual states and only runs
the full activity-tracking logic in Auto mode.
