Now

  • URL previews are under Messages: both the "URL Preview" and "URL Preview in Encrypted Rooms" switches, including the one flagged "Privacy risk". The rest of privacy is under Privacy.
  • Two switches overlap: "Hide Typing & Read Receipts" and "Private Read Receipts" both change read receipts, and it's unclear what happens with both on.

Change

  • Move both URL preview switches to the Privacy section (Privacy & security after the page split).
  • Replace the two receipt switches with:
    • Read receipts: Everyone · Only the server · Off;
    • a separate Show when I'm typing switch.
  • Map the existing stored values onto the new controls, so nobody's privacy setting changes on upgrade.

Done when: every privacy-affecting option is in one place, and each current combination of the old switches maps to the same behaviour.

"Hide typing & read receipts" (hideActivity) does three things today:

  • hides your typing;
  • makes your receipts private;
  • hides other people's read receipts from you.

Splitting it into "Read receipts: Everyone / Only the server / Off" plus a separate typing switch would silently change that third effect. There's also no real "Off": Matrix always sends a receipt, and private just means only you and your server see it.

So this is one three-way choice that maps exactly onto the existing settings, with no migration:

  • Everyone: others see what you've read and when you're typing.
  • Private read receipts: others don't see what you've read; typing still shows.
  • Hide my activity: no typing indicator, private read receipts, and you don't see other people's receipts either.

Every old combination keeps its behaviour. Both link-preview switches move into Privacy as planned.
